Honourable Louise Mailhot receives honourary doctorate from University of Ottawa

Louise Mailhot, partner and strategic advisor at Fasken Martineau, was proclaimed doctor honoris causa by the University of Ottawa for her remarkable career.
The Honourable Louise Mailhot practiced as a lawyer before becoming a judge of the Superior Court of Québec. Later, she became the first woman from the Bar of Montreal to be appointed judge to the Court of Appeal of Québec. She was also the first woman lawyer elected to the Administrative Committee of the Barreau du Québec in 1974. From 1996 to 2005, she was vice-president of the International Association of Judges, an NGO that encompasses national associations of judges from over 65 countries. In 2005, she was appointed as the International Association of Judges’ representative to the United Nations.
Throughout her career, Louise Mailhot has been an active participant in the Canadian and Québec legal communities. Ms. Mailhot has written three works on legal drafting, co-edits the Revue du droit du travail and the Revue légale, sits on the editorial board of Magazine Justice dans le Monde, wrote several collective publications on various law-related topics, and is a distinguished lecturer. She has dealt with a number of topics over the years – judicial independence, legal discipline and ethics, Canadian history of women in law and on the bench and the reform of civil justice.
