Because of the nature of our practice, which serves clients both domestic and international, blue chip and start-up, our tax lawyers have had extensive experience advising with respect to a myriad of tax and related issues. Our group comprises lawyers at all levels of experience and boasts one of the most substantial complements of senior tax counsel. The senior counsel provide a level of knowledge, experience and contacts which is vital to the expeditious and effective resolution of tax issues facing our clients. Several of our lawyers have been consistently ranked among the foremost tax practitioners in Canada.
Our tax group provides clients with timely and practical advice on a cost-effective basis. An important part of the practice involves planning for transactions such as financings, acquisitions, divestitures, mergers and other reorganizations. Equally important is the advice we provide to assist clients in conducting their day-to-day operations on a tax-efficient basis. The tax group also plays a key role in resolving disputes with taxation authorities, and represents clients before tribunals and courts of all levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada and The House of Lords. Many of Canada's leading tax cases have been litigated by members of our group.
Our tax lawyers have lectured extensively in Canada and internationally on taxation matters and have taken leading roles with the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association, the American Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association/Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Joint Committee on Taxation and other organizations. Some of our lawyers, both junior and senior, have been retained by, or seconded to, the Federal Department of Finance to consult on the formulation of tax policy. As a result, we have an intimate knowledge of the legislative and administrative process and extensive contacts within the Department of Finance and the Canada Revenue Agency.
