Bill 173: "Modernizing" Ontario's Mining Legislation

Aboriginal Law Bulletin
June 2009

The Government of Ontario recently introduced proposed amendments to the Mining Act. The amendments make sweeping changes to the regulation of prospecting land, staking mining claims, surface owners' rights, exploration work, diamond mine royalties and Aboriginal consultation. The proposed amendments must be read in conjunction with Bill 191, which effectively imposes a moratorium on mining in the Far North. For more information and analysis please see attached Bulletin.
