Calgary is North America's fastest growing economic region. Its finance and business industry created more than 19,000 new jobs in the past ten years. The Calgary region will generate over 64,000 new jobs over the forecast period of 2006-2011, and will account for approximately 32% of all new jobs in Alberta.
Recently honoured as the World's Cleanest City Mercer Quality of Living in a survey published in 2007 by Forbes Magazine, Calgary's commitment to climate change has garnered many awards and international accolades.
Among many major annual festivals hosted in Calgary, the Calgary Stampede is the most popular, attracting visitors from all over the world. In 1988, Calgary became the first Canadian city to host the Olympic Winter Games.

Slightly more than one million residents make Greater Calgary the fifth largest metropolitan area in Canada.
Economy
Calgary's economy ranks 1st in Canada with an estimated Real GDP growth rate of 6.9% in 2006 and 4.2% in 2007. Calgary's strong pace is anticipated to continue from 2008-2011.
Calgary's economy is dominated by the oil and gas industry making it home to 87% of Canada's oil and natural gas producers and 66% of coal producers.
Technology, Manufacturing, Financial and Business Services, Transportation and Logistics and Film and Creative Industries are examples of the many other industries contributing to Calgary's vigorous growth and to its international reputation for innovation.
