T.E.A.M. Work (Training, Education and Mentoring)
Training
We recognize that the best training is hands-on. As such, our students become fully engaged in files and enjoy interaction with our lawyers and clients from day one. Working with the firm's partners, associates and staff, you will be able to take advantage of an enormous range of experience, expertise and talent.
In addition, our formal Student Orientation Program ensures you have the necessary tools to assist you in achieving your true potential. Calgary students join their colleagues in Fasken Martineau's Vancouver office for an extensive orientation program that covers research methods, computer and business systems and library resources.
Our Librarian, based in Vancouver, conducts a library orientation and research seminar for all students. At the beginning of the articling year, the Librarian reviews the essential techniques of legal research and canvasses the primary Canadian resources in both print and electronic formats. Each student also attends a QuickLaw training seminar.
The Library has access to QuickLaw, Westlaw, LEXIS/NEXIS and non-legal databases such as Dow Jones/Infoglobe and Infomart. All students have access to QuickLaw, the Internet, and other electronic services from the desktop.
The Library staff is always willing to assist and students are encouraged to ask for assistance. The Firm also has full-time research lawyers based in Vancouver who are available to help students throughout the year.
During their articling year, students also attend a series of student and lawyer workshops as well as client seminars and events in Calgary.
Education
Fasken Martineau in Calgary offers students an ideal foundation on which to build an exciting career in law. We will work with you to tailor your articles to suit your interests and strengths. Our goal is to provide you with exposure to a broad range of legal practice, while enabling you to seek greater experience in the areas of law that interest you most.
Rotation
Although we do not have a formal departmental rotation system, students will spend half of their articling year working in the Business Department and half of their year in the Litigation and Regulatory Departments. This ensures that students obtain exposure to all of our principal area of practice.
CPLED
All students in Alberta are required to complete the CPLED program which has replaced the bar admission course. The program involves weekly assignments and periodic competency evaluations over a six-month period. To assist students in completing those requirements, the firm ensures each student receives time every week to dedicate directly to their studies.
Mentoring
Each student is assigned a principal and a mentor. The principal is responsible for the student's professional development and their mentor is responsible for the student's integration into the firm. The mentor can also act as a sounding board for the student, providing confidential advice, informal feedback and encouragement in areas of interest or concern.
While all members of the firm are available and expected to assist in the supervision and training of our students, your supervisors are directly responsible for providing guidance and ensuring the quality of your experience.
