Daniel Brock

Partner

Daniel Brock is a partner in our Government Relations & Ethics Practice Group and has been recognized as one of Canada's top 100 lobbyists. Daniel brings extensive experience of federal government decision-making and public policy development, having held senior advisory positions with the federal government, including acting as Senior Policy Advisor to the federal Justice Minister and Attorney General, Minister of Finance, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment.

Daniel advises clients in public affairs, strategic communications and government relations at the federal, provincial and municipal levels. He, and other members of the Government Relations and Ethics team, also provide advice in crisis communication and issue management, public policy advocacy, communication planning, public affairs counsel, stakeholder relations and the development of strategies in these areas. In 2008, Daniel was recognized by the national political and government newsweekly, The Hill Times, as one of Canada's top 100 lobbyists.

Before studying law, Daniel worked as a Reporter and Producer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and the Maritimes. His journalism experience included covering federal, provincial and international politics and public policy news and current affairs for programs such as Morningside and the National Radio News.

Daniel was admitted to McGill's Law Faculty as a recipient of the Leon Levinson Award for journalists studying law and graduated as the recipient of the Louis H. Rohrlick Memorial Prize for Public International Law.

From 1997 until he joined Fasken Martineau in 2004, Daniel's professional life revolved in and around federal politics and government in Ottawa. He worked as Senior Communications Advisor to former federal Environment Minister, Christine Stewart; as a senior consultant with a leading international public affairs company; and as a lawyer with both the federal government and a national Canadian law firm in Ottawa.

In 2003, Daniel left private practice to become Director of Policy in John Manley's Liberal leadership campaign, and later joined Manley's political staff as Senior Policy Advisor at the Department of Finance and in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Following the swearing-in of Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin's first Cabinet, Daniel joined Irwin Cotler's office as Senior Policy Advisor at the Department of Justice and the office of the Attorney General. In this capacity he advised on a number of high-profile and sensitive files including reform to the Supreme Court appointment process, the federal Sponsorship issue, and same-sex marriage.
