Dr. Philip Swain is a registered Canadian and United States Patent Agent. His practice focuses on the life sciences, in particular pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, biochemistry, agriculture, and organic chemistry. In addition to his life sciences practice, Dr. Swain has considerable experience obtaining patent protection for medical devices, telecommunications, software, electrical, mechanical devices and designs. Dr. Swain serves a broad range of clients from solo inventors to multinational companies.
Dr. Swain recognizes the need for active strategic management of intellectual property (IP) early in the development of technologies, and throughout the technology/product life-cycle. He provides a unique outlook on IP protection that his clients find refreshing.
Dr. Swain holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in chemistry and biochemistry (University of Salford, UK) and Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry (University of Salford, UK). In addition, Dr Swain has held post-doctoral fellowships at the University Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and the University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Swain has worked in-house as Director of Intellectual Property at a Montreal-based biotechnology company and more recently in the IP department of a national law firm. Before this, Dr. Swain has worked in-house at a multinational pharmaceutical company and for several law firms in Canada and the United States. In his previous career as a medicinal chemist, Dr. Swain worked for a Boston-based biotechnology company where he invented a drug abuse vaccine for which he is named as an inventor on several patents.
