May 3, 2007

On May 3, 2007, The Honourable Stephen T. Goudge, Commissioner of the Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario, announced that he had appointed four commission counsel, including Jennifer McAleer of Fasken Martineau.

In a news release, Commissioner Goudge was quoted as saying that the Commission had the very important job of "[restoring] public confidence in the use and reliability of pediatric forensic pathology evidence in Ontario's criminal proceedings. [The Commission] must produce a report and recommendations that will minimize the possibility that the administration of justice could be affected by flawed pathology findings or evidence."

The Inquiry's mandate is to conduct a systematic review and assessment of the policies, procedures, practices, accountability and oversight mechanisms, quality control measures and institutional arrangements of pediatric forensic pathology in Ontario from 1981 to 2001 as they relate to its practice and use in investigations and criminal proceedings. For more information, see www.goudgeinquiry.ca.

Jennifer McAleer has a broad litigation practice with an emphasis in tort law, and also acts on behalf of clients in the area of criminal and regulatory defence.
