Fasken Martineau reduces carbon footprint

March 25, 2008

Fasken Martineau is pleased to announce that 20,000 square metres, roughly the surface of four football fields, will be reforested to compensate for the firm's CO2 emissions. That's more than 1200 trees that will be planted in Joliette using a patented methodology.

Fasken Martineau has developed a business relationship with ZÉRØCO2, a company that engages in activities that compensate for GHG emissions by reforesting land. Prominent lawyers from Fasken Martineau's Environmental Law Practice Group led by Pierre Meunier, André Turmel and Florence Dagicour have coordinated this latest tree planting project since 2007. The firm selected ZÉRØCO2 as a partner in this initiative because of its expertise in both tree planting and offsetting of CO2 emissions.

Thanks to the Fasken Martineau Montréal and Québec City employees who answered the ZÉRØCO2 questionnaire, we have successfully calculated the number of CO2 tonnes that they emitted in 2006 travelling to and from work.

Photos of the operation are available here.

Fasken Martineau's commitment to this program is one of the first activities of its kind in Canada. The greening of Fasken Martineau is a priority for the Energy, Environmental, Climate Change and Regulatory Practice Group. Other initiatives in all of our offices will be announced shortly.
