Associate Counsel

Albert J. (Bertie) McClean, Q.C., is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia, and Associate Counsel with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP in Vancouver.

At The University of British Columbia, he was Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1971 to 1976, and Associate Vice-President Academic from 1984 to 1995. In the latter capacity, he, amongst other duties, acted as general legal counsel to the University, working on a wide range of legal matters. At various times, he was the University nominee on the Boards of Trustees of the University Hospital, Shaughnessy Hospital and the British Columbia Cancer Agency. From 1984 to 1993 he was editor of the Canadian Bar Review, Canada's leading law journal.

At Fasken Martineau he works primarily in trusts and estates, both domestic and international, and in pension law. In 2002, he completed a report for the Attorney-General of British Columbia on Representation Agreements and Enduring Powers of Attorney; and from 2004 to 2006 was Chair of the Wills Sub-Committee of the British Columbia Law Institute Reform Project on the Law of Succession.

His main legal areas of interest are trusts and estates, property law and pensions. He has written and lectured extensively in those fields, and has provided opinions on them to both the private sector and to government. His understanding of pension law was enhanced by service as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University Pension Plan.
