Darryl Denny, Social Benefits Tribunal No. 0503-02136, 0503-02243 (pro bono)

Client

Darryl Denny

Date

March 2006

Acted as pro bono counsel on behalf of a recipient of social assistance who stood to have his welfare benefits reduced significantly. At issue was whether the recipient had received sufficient disclosure of the evidence against him from the respondent, the Ontario Works Social Services Department. Relying on Stinchcombe principles and its application to administrative tribunals, among others, the tribunal ordered full disclosure. In the end, the additional information proved useful in avoiding a reduction in social assistance.
