Fasken Martineau is focused on fostering diverse environments across all the communities in which we operate. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected not only in the policies and practices we follow, but through our active community engagement. We support and encourage inclusive environments in all of our offices, drawing on our differences to promote a wide array of initiatives.

Representative Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

Canadian Paralympic Committee

Fasken Martineau has been an active supporter of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. The firm provides the CPC with pro bono legal services and works diligently with the organization to advance the Paralympic movement. In January 2016, fundraisers for both the “Champion’s Journey” and “Circle of Champions” were launched firm-wide. Funds raised through these campaigns support CPC initiatives including Paralympic Schools Week, FUNdamental Physical Literary Resource, and Changing Minds, Changing Lives. Each of these programs is devoted to providing the knowledge and tools needed to positively impact the life of a young person with a disability. Through initiatives like these, Fasken Martineau actively works with the CPC to create accessible and welcoming environments for the disabled across the country and help develop a sustainable Paralympic system in Canada.

“Through this partnership with Fasken Martineau, the power of the Paralympic brand has the potential to be even further showcased across corporate Canada,” said Gaétan Tardif, President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “We are delighted to welcome Fasken Martineau to the team and look forward to working together to continue to grow the Canadian Paralympic movement.”

Fasken Martineau’s Pride Network

Fasken Martineau’s Pride Network is the main connection point for our firm’s LGBT initiatives. Consistently addressing the issues facing the LGBT community, the Network has been repeatedly recognized for its educational and charitable work. The group is actively involved in local and international community outreach, offering support to LGBT organizations including Rainbow Railway, Covenant House and The 519 Church Street Community Centre. A recent panel discussion of the Pride Network, “The Modern LGBT Family: Parenthood, the Workplace and Estate Planning” provided guidance and legal advice on LGBT issues, connecting this community to crucial resources, knowledge and support.

Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment

B-BBEE is the South African Government's set of policies intended to involve previously disadvantaged communities in the mainstream economy. Fasken Martineau has been rated by Empowerdex, an accredited rating agency, as an A-rated entity and level-4 contributor to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE). We are also a Value-Adding Supplier in terms of the BBBEE Codes of Good Practice.

Dress for Success

For many years, our Vancouver office has been a supporter of Dress for Success, an international organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women. Dress for Success has provided professional attire to hundreds of women, as well as offering support networks and career development tools. Working with this organization’s Vancouver affiliate, Fasken Martineau has participated in numerous fundraising activities, including sponsoring the annual IMPACT 360 event.

Much of the success of our relationship with Dress for Success is due to Carmine Boskovich, who continues to champion the firm’s involvement and commitment to this organization. Carmine has experienced first-hand the impact of Dress for Success: “I love to hear the stories about the women who have come through the program, and hearing the success stories. One memory that stood out to me is one of the spokeswomen talking about the impact that going through the program had on her children. The change in her confidence and outlook made a big difference in her life and as her confidence grew, so did the confidence of her children. You’re impacting many people within a family, not just one person.”

In March 2016, Fasken Martineau launched STORK across its Québec offices. The program provides new parents with advice and tools to facilitate their transition into parenthood. STORK offers an important forum to discuss firm perceptions of parental leave, and works to harmonize differing generational outlooks through accessible and open dialogue. The program supports the needs of professional parents, offering mentorship, relevant reading, and advice for childcare solutions.

Fasken Martineau’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Preserving an inclusive culture that reflects the diverse communities of our firm is a priority for Fasken Martineau. Our support and promotion of diversity and inclusion reflects the broad array of cultures of our firm members and clients. We work diligently to create an environment where difference is respected and promoted across our firm by:

  • Ensuring that our commitment to diversity is reflected in all aspects of our administration and operations.
  • Maintaining recruitment, retention, development and promotion practices for lawyers, legal assistants, students and staff that result in a firm whose membership is reflective of the diverse communities in which we operate.
  • Promoting diversity within the Bar and at law schools.
  • Working with our clients, not-for-profit associations and institutions across the world to encourage diversity awareness and inclusiveness.

Fasken Martineau is a signatory of the Law Firm Diversity & Inclusion Network's Statement of Principles

As part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion in the legal community, Fasken Martineau has signed the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network's Statement of Principles.
