Healthcare Regulatory Colleges

Thousands of health care professionals in Canada are self-regulated through professional “colleges” formed by provincial statutes. The boards of these colleges are in most cases made up of professionals who are elected by other members of the profession, as well as government-appointed lay people. These colleges are mandated to regulate their members in the public interest. Among other things, they make regulations to govern their members, and they develop, and ensure compliance with, standards of qualification for entrants to the profession. They develop and maintain standards of practice, policies and standards of professional ethics for their members. They receive and investigate complaints about their members from other professionals and the public and, where warranted, they commence discipline proceedings against members who are alleged to have committed acts of professional misconduct or to be incompetent. Depending on the province, among the professions that are regulated in this way are Audiologists and Speech Pathologists, Chiropractors, Dental Hygienists, Dental Technologists, Dental Surgeons, Denturists, Dietitians, Massage Therapists, Midwives, Nurses, Opticians, Optometrists, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists and Physicians and Surgeons.

Our experience with dozens of such colleges across the country positions us well to advise colleges, professional associations and those with whom they interact, on day-to-day and mission critical matters including the drafting of regulations and standards of practice, promotion of inter-professional collaboration, changes to scopes of practice and balancing the issues relating to risk mitigation / patient safety with those relating to professional integrity and the reputation of dedicated professionals.
