Mark Andrews was the petitioner in Andrews v. The Law Society of British Columbia, the landmark decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on the effect of the equality rights provision in the Charter of Rights.
Andrews (the respondent), a British subject permanently residing in Canada, met all the requirements for admission to the British Columbia bar except that of Canadian citizenship. His action for a declaration that the requirement violated s. 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was dismissed at trial but allowed on appeal.
Andrews was represented by Fasken Martineau Vancouver lawyers Geoff Cowper (lead counsel) and Stanley Martin (co-counsel).
