In an earlier article (IECLC Vol. 10, No. 9) we discussed various aspects of citizen journalism and considered whether such journalists — be they bloggers, social networkers, website authors or otherwise — should be subject to the same obligations and protections as their professional counterparts in the defamation context. In the time between submitting our article and its publication, the Supreme Court of Canada weighed in on this issue with its landmark decision in Grant v. Torstar, [2009] S.C.J. No. 61, 2009 SCC 61.
