Fasken Martineau has been successful in obtaining intervener status, on behalf of its client Lakeside Steel, in the application against US Steel filed on behalf of the Minister of Industry under the Investment Canada Act.

In July, 2009, the Federal Government applied to the Federal Court to force US Steel to live up to employment and production undertakings that it made when it purchased Stelco (now US Steel Canada) in October, 2007. Lakeside applied for intervener status, and its application was heard on August 31.

"Lakeside believes the appropriate remedy under the Investment Canada Act for breach of US Steel's undertakings is the sale of US Steel Canada," said Jeffrey Kaufman, a partner at Fasken Martineau. "This decision granting intervener status to Lakeside will allow Lakeside to have its voice heard before the Federal Court in this important, and precedent-setting, case," added Mr. Kaufman.

In October, 2005, Lakeside acquired Stelco's steel pipe and tubing manufacturing business.
