Our Calgary office provides a unique opportunity for students to not only work and learn within one of Canada's leading national law firms, but also to play an integral part in the development and growth of our office.

From the moment you arrive, you'll become a valued member of our team. We will provide the training you'll need to familiarize yourself with the firm's structure and devote our energy and resources to your professional development at this important stage in your career.

We offer our students the opportunity to:

  • develop technical skills in drafting, negotiating and oral advocacy;
  • hone your interpersonal and communication skills through interaction with your colleagues and frequent direct contact with clients and opposing counsel;
  • work on matters that will challenge you to deal creatively with clients' legal issues;
  • assume carriage of files under the supervision of experienced lawyers and be part of a team on larger, more complex matters; and
  • work in a supportive and friendly environment as you develop the new skills you'll need to excel as a lawyer.

We ensure that our students have a summer and/or articling year filled with excellent work, strong professional development and mentoring in a collegial and team-oriented environment.

Summer Student Program

Our summer student program provides you with a stimulating and challenging learning experience following your first year of law school and is intended to begin building the bridge between your studies and your legal career.

Your interests shape your experience at Fasken Martineau. As part of our collaborative approach, we consult with each student to discuss the student's goals and objectives and endeavour to accommodate the student's interest in particular areas. You will be matched with a mentor who will act as a support and go-to for work allocations, questions or concerns. Summer students have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas or can choose to focus on an area of specific interest, which we make all efforts to accommodate. Uniquely, we offer our students the opportunity to rotate through both our Corporate and Litigation Groups during their summer. Summer students are usually assigned one or two major projects to be worked on throughout the summer.

Our Calgary office currently hires only first-year summer students.

Articling Student Program

During your articling year, you will become an integral part of our team and work on major projects in various areas of law. Our goal is to provide our students with experience that will be challenging and interesting and that will develop exceptional lawyers.

Our full-service practice allows you to gain experience in your areas of interest and to explore other fields of practice as your interests evolve. Our articling program is made up of two formal rotations in the Corporate Group and the Litigation Group. We collaborate with each student prior to his or her arrival at the firm to arrange a suitable rotation sequence. While in your rotations, you will be able to take work from any of the practice areas within that specific group. This flexibility also allows you to be more deeply involved in files and the opportunity to seek out an experience that matches your career objectives. We encourage and support our students being directly involved with our clients when appropriate. Your interaction with clients will develop your awareness of the importance of excellent client service and your knowledge of their business objectives and priorities.

As an articling student with Fasken Martineau, you have the ability to direct your own career, with the assistance and guidance of your principal and the Student Committee. The firm's commitment to training, education and mentoring will guarantee a meaningful and rewarding articling experience. Formal evaluations are conducted at the end of each rotation and informal feedback is given regularly.

Our Calgary office does not currently hire articling students as we endeavour to fill our articling positions with our summer students.

Our students are compensated at a level comparable to that offered by other national firms in Calgary.
