April 10, 2012

Toronto (Canada) – Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, announced today that its International Arbitration group has once again been ranked by Global Arbitration Review in its annual GAR 100 listing of the world's top arbitration firms.

Being recognized as a leading international arbitration firm is an important achievement in this growing area of dispute resolution. In 2011, the firm provided its clients with strategic advice regarding commercial and investment arbitration in several African, South American and Eastern European countries.

"Litigation and international arbitration are definitely in Fasken Martineau's DNA. Being listed by this prestigious publication is proof that Fasken Martineau has an established name in the arbitration community and highlights our group's depth of expertise and many successes," said Geoff Cowper, leader of the firm's Litigation & Dispute Resolution group.

Over the years, Fasken Martineau has achieved some eye-catching results in international arbitration. The group's co-chair, Henri Alvarez, continues to be one of the world's most sought after arbitrators. Last month, in one of the largest recoveries in sovereign related litigation, Fasken Martineau helped First Quantum Minerals negotiate US$1.25 billion in a settlement with Kazakhstan's Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation for mining properties in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2010, the firm helped Canadian telecom provider Telus in an arbitration with a commercial customer and then in the enforcement of the award in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. In 2006, members of the firm helped a Cypriot investor win some US$46 million in damages from Hungary in an ICSID case over the expropriation of the Budapest International Airport.

Global Arbitration Review is the world's leading international arbitration law journal and news service. The annual GAR 100 list is a guide to the international arbitration capabilities of law firms.
