Richard is an associate in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group and has been involved in a variety of matters involving complex commercial and contractual disputes, product liability, mining and exploration rights, electricity transmission and generation, insurance disputes and negligence actions.
Richard has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice in trial, appellate and bankruptcy proceedings, and before the Court of Appeal. Richard has appeared before numerous administrative tribunals including the Ontario Securities Commission, the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, the Mining and Lands Commissioner and the Licence Appeal Tribunal.
Richard advises Canadian and U.S. manufacturers on regulatory requirements for various products, recalls, and risk management issues, including product labels, product warnings.
Richard's degrees in Earth Sciences provides him with the background necessary to practise effectively in the firm's Global Energy and Global Mining Groups. Richard has assisted electricity service providers with spill remediation, groundwater contamination and regulatory advice. Recently, Richard has been involved in confirming regulatory approval for the relocation of a transmission line around the ongoing mining activities of one of his clients. Richard has been involved in a number of mining matters including the protection of a client's joint venture interest, seeking compensation for expropriation and loss of surface rights and obtaining damages/replacement value for faulty mining equipment.
Richard is also a member of the Research Group providing legal research and analysis in a wide range of practice areas including contract disputes, class actions, privacy, products liability and Aboriginal law. Richard commonly provides advice to clients on the impact of new and changing legislation and government policy.
Richard is the associate's coordinator for the Toronto office's Pro Bono Duty Counsel Program, providing legal services to unrepresented litigants through Pro Bono Law Ontario.
Richard summered with the firm in 2004, at which time he was seconded to the New York office. Richard articled with the firm in 2005 and joined as an associate in 2006.
