Introduced in 1998, the Summer Student Secondment Program provides our students with the opportunity to participate in an external secondment as part of the summer program. The program is optional, but for those students who are interested, we provide a broad offering of secondment opportunities, including with another of our other Canadian offices and with various clients, government agencies and NGO's. The secondment program provides our students with unique opportunities to experience the practice of law in other settings and from different viewpoints.

We also sponsor those of our students who are enrolled in the University of Toronto Public Interest Advocacy Program, International Human Rights Program and Innovations Foundation Program, the University of Western Ontario International Internship Program and the Osgoode Hall Summer Public Interest Advocacy Program.

A unique feature of our program is that students often present their own suggestions for possible placements. As long as a secondment opportunity involves a substantial legal component, provides proper supervision, training and mentoring, offers a meaningful and interesting work experience and is in a jurisdiction deemed sufficiently stable to ensure the student's safety, it will receive full consideration. Some of the placements which students have initiated to date include Shibolet & Co. (Israel), the Canadian Embassy, International Trade Section (Washington, DC), British Institute of International and Comparative Law (London, UK), and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (Austria).

We also invite you to contact our current students to discuss their secondment experiences. Under the Our Students section of our site you will find their contact information.
