Over 550 lawyers attended Fasken Martineau’s Professional Development Symposium

Fasken Martineau a leading international law firm, announced that over 550 lawyers attended its Professional Development Symposium. “This event is a significant contribution by the firm, and its partners, to maintaining and updating the skills of corporate lawyers,” said Claude Auger, Regional Managing Partner of Fasken Martineau in Québec.
The Symposium provided corporate lawyers with a unique source of information accredited by the Québec Bar as required under the association’s mandatory continuous education by-law. Since April 1, 2009, Québec’s 22,500 lawyers are required to take 30 hours of professional training every 24 months. Participating lawyers benefited from the expertise of lecturers who discussed legal issues in various areas of the law, while accumulating 3.75 hours of training in the process.
“Our firm is the first in Québec to offer a program that specifically allowed lawyers to meet the requirements of the new by-law. This innovative event shows once again that Fasken Martineau is a leader in promoting excellence,” added Mr. Auger.
The Symposium offered nine workshops covering legal issues in seven areas of practice including:

- Requests for Information and Professional Secrecy
- New Governance Rules
- Employment Agreements: Some Legal and Practical Aspects
Topics included the role lawyers play in the age of stricter corporate governance and how their roles and responsibilities are defined, what expectations they must meet within their organization, and what in-house lawyers should expect from outside legal counsel.
