Secondment Q & A's

I'm curious. How long are the secondments?
It varies depending on the specific secondment and taking into account factors such as the preferences of the organization providing the secondment opportunity, location and availability. Generally, however, they run for 4 weeks. In the case of UofT international human rights secondments, the organizations sometimes have a minimum 6-week period and this is handled on a case by case basis. Sometimes, the student will extend the secondment if it takes place at the end of the summer.
I am interested in a number of secondments and would like to contact the students on the list you provided. How can I reach the students?
You can contact any of the current articling students via email here at the office. If the student is not at the office let us know and we can send along his or her email or phone number.
Are there any guidelines/criteria to arranging one's own secondment? I am aware that some former summer students have been involved in creating their own secondments.
As long as a secondment opportunity involves a substantial legal component, provides proper supervision, training and mentoring and offers a meaningful and interesting work experience, it will receive full consideration. More recently we have had to address the issue of safety if considering student initiated secondments. For this reason, we ask that you contact us prior to exploring any initiative so that we may discuss its merits. The timing of all such secondments must be cleared with the Firm prior to completing final arrangements. The Firm's sponsorship involves payment of your salary while you are out of the office attending an external secondment arranged either through the Firm or the school.
When would the decisions be made as to who gets to go on secondment?
We finalize them as soon as possible so that the students may make appropriate arrangements for the summer. Anyone interested in an external secondment will be accommodated, if not in his or her first choices, then an alternative will be discussed.
I have many areas of interest for secondments, should I list them all?
You may have to narrow the options so we can better focus on your choices. It does require a lot of effort to set the secondments up so it is best to direct those efforts at your top choices. We would suggest no more than 4 options.
School Programmes. I have recently completed an application for the school's secondment program. I understand that another student has already applied for this as well. Will there be limits placed upon the number of students that are able to participate in this program?
No, initially we sponsor one spot in each of the programs at UofT, Osgoode and Western. This sponsorship number is amended subsequent to the recruitment process to accommodate all students who have registered with the school program.
What would the secondment at the UofT's Innovations Foundations entail i.e. is it a 'help as needed' or will there be specific job descriptions? Is there a legal department since it is a university-type organization?
Information regarding the nature of work assignments at the school-organized secondments should be directed to the co-ordinator of the program at the school.
What level of sponsorship does the Firm provide?
The level of sponsorship varies depending on the secondment. For the majority of students, the sponsorship will be the payment of salary by the Firm during the term of the secondment. For students seconded to clients there may be some reimbursement of costs, for example for parking or gas if it is necessary for the student to use private transportation to get to the client's place of business.

Students seconded between Canadian offices are encouraged to arrange their own accommodation. This is usually done through family/friend connections in the area or, where possible, exchanging accommodation with students seconded from other firm offices.
How are client organizations chosen? Is there already a listing of 'partner' organizations?
These are selected based on the student's interest. If you have not yet done so, you should read former students' secondment reviews under the student section of our website. You will note that placements change from year to year because they are driven by the student's preferences. If you have a particular industry interest we will canvas the partners to solicit potential placements.
Would it be possible to approach a specific partner (who has clients in which I am interested) for a secondment opportunity?
That can be arranged, but please direct all inquiries through Sally Woods.
How specific should we be regarding the areas of interest for the Firm portion of the summer, ie. would business vs. litigation suffice? Or should we get into greater detail like "competition" and "computer law"?
Business is sufficient, however, if you have a specific interest in the areas mentioned above you should list those, as the practice groups will be aware of your interest and send work your way. List your preferences and we can adjust on this end where appropriate.

Suggestion: Make sure you have a valid passport.
