Secondment Q & A's

How long is the secondment?
Generally, the secondment runs for four weeks. However, the length may vary depending on the preferences of the organization providing the secondment opportunity, its location and/or availability. For example, in the case of UofT international human rights secondments, some organizations require a minimum 6-week commitment. Some students have extended their secondments if they take place at the end of the summer.
What level of sponsorship does the Firm provide?
The Firm pays your salary while you are attending an external secondment arranged either through the Firm or your school. For students seconded to clients, there may be some additional reimbursement of costs, such as parking or gas, if you are required to use private transportation to travel to the client’s site.
I have recently completed an application for my school's secondment program. I understand that another student has applied for this as well. Will there be limits placed upon the number of students that are able to participate in this program?
Initially we sponsor one student in each of the programs offered by UofT, Osgoode and Western. This number may be amended subsequent to the recruitment process to accommodate all students who have registered with the school program.
I am interested in discussing secondment experiences with past students. How may I reach them?
You may contact any of the current articling students via their emails listed on the website. If the student is not currently at the office, let us know and we can send along his or her email or phone number.
I know that past summer students have been involved in creating their own secondments? What is the approval process for such secondments?
As long as a secondment opportunity involves a substantial legal component, provides proper supervision, training and mentoring, and offers a meaningful and interesting work experience, it will receive full consideration. More recently we have had to address the issue of safety when considering student-initiated secondments. For this reason, we ask that you contact us prior to exploring any initiative so that we may discuss its merits. The timing of all such secondments must be cleared with the Firm prior to completing final arrangements.
How are client organizations chosen? Is there a list of ‘partner’ organizations?
There is no formal list of ‘partner’ organizations. Client organizations are selected based on students’ interests. If you have not yet done so, we suggest you read prior summer students’ secondment reviews under the student section of our website. You will note that placements change from year to year because they are determined by student preferences.
Can I approach a partner who has a client that I am interested in to discuss a secondment opportunity?
It can be arranged, but please direct all initial inquiries to Sally Woods.
I am interested in many secondments. Should I list them all?
You may wish to narrow down your choices to 3 or 4 so we can better focus on your preferences. It does require a lot of effort to organize the secondments so it is best to direct your efforts to your top choices.
When are secondment arrangements finalized?
Our goal is to finalize secondments by early spring so that students may make appropriate arrangements for the summer. Anyone interested in a secondment will be accommodated, if not in his or her first choice, then in an appropriate alternative which will be discussed.

Suggestion: Make sure you have a valid passport.
