Summer Student Program

Our summer student program provides you with a stimulating and challenging learning experience prior to your final year of law school and is intended to begin building the bridge between your studies and your legal career.

Your interests shape your experience at Fasken Martineau. As part of our collaborative approach, we consult with each student to discuss the student's goals and objectives and endeavour to accommodate the student's interest in particular areas. Summer students have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas or can choose to focus on an area of specific interest, which we make all efforts to accommodate. Summer students are usually assigned one or two major projects to be worked on throughout the summer.

Every student has the opportunity to participate in secondments to our London, Montreal and Toronto offices. Students spend approximately one month of their summer working closely with lawyers in those other offices. We pay for the student's travel costs and an allowance towards their living expenses. The past experience of the students on secondment has been uniformly positive. This is a great opportunity for students to get to know lawyers in another office and to experience living in a different city. By following our Secondments link, you will find a sampling of previous summer secondments.

Articling Student Program

Our goal is to ensure that your articles provides you with the requisite experience and training to ensure your future success. The flexibility of the program provides you with the freedom to modify your rotations, even during the articling term. This flexibility also allows you deeper involvement in files you are working on and the opportunity to seek out an experience that matches your career objectives. During your articling term, you will become an integral part of our team and work on major projects in various areas of law. Your interaction with clients will develop your awareness of the importance of excellent client service.

Our structured articling program is made up of four rotations: Business; Litigation; Labour, Employment & Human Rights and Junioring. Again, we collaborate with each student prior to his/her arrival at the firm to arrange a suitable rotation sequence. While in your rotations, you will be able to take work from any of the practice groups within that specific Department.  If you express an interest in a particular area, we will endeavour to seat you near the lawyers that practice in that area, and you can seek out as much work from them as you want. For students who opt for the Business Stream, you should have time to do this with 2-3 different practice groups.

Respecting the diversity and interests of our articling students, no two students will follow the same program throughout the articling year. As an articling student with Fasken Martineau, you have the ability to direct your own career, with the assistance and guidance of your mentor, the Student Committee and the Student Coordinator.

The strength of each of our Business, Litigation and Labour, Employment & Human Rights sections, and the variety of practice groups within those sections, allows you to gain experience in your areas of interest and to explore other fields of practice as your interests evolve. The firm's commitment to T.E.A.M. work (Training, Education and Mentoring) will guarantee a meaningful and rewarding articling experience.

Business Stream

Students interested in Business law can take advantage of our business stream. This uniquely customized program combines the Business and Junioring rotations, enabling students to organize their articles and receive maximum exposure to our Business group.     Will I get training/mentoring?

Yes. Apart from all of the training and mentoring available to you as part of the general student program, our business department offers something unique - a practicum week. At the start of your business rotation you will be matched up with a partner who practices in an area that interests you. For a full week you will work exclusively with that partner, and see and participate in every aspect of his or her day-to-day practice including client phone calls, client meetings and closings. This is a great opportunity to dive right into the practice of law with a partner who practices in an area that interests you.

If I know I am interested in business, do I still have to rotate through the other departments?

Yes, but you can take advantage of our "business stream". Our business stream lets you organize your articles so that you get the maximum exposure to our business group. You begin your articles in the business department, and spend up to 20 weeks there, before continuing on to your other rotations. The long continuous period permits our business lawyers to involve you in major transactions, where you will be able to see the big picture from start to finish. But, being a good lawyer entails more than just being technically good at the law in a particular area. To truly provide value to clients, lawyers must also be trusted advisors - a core value of Fasken Martineau's unique client service philosophy. It also gives you the opportunity to get to know the lawyers and staff in the other departments. We are not only a collegial place to work, but a collaborative one. Working with other lawyers, including lawyers from other departments, to solve a client's business problem is commonplace. Knowing the people in other departments is a key element to your success at the firm.

Can I work with a practice group?

It's up to you. Within the business department you will not be "assigned" to a particular group, but you are able to take work from anywhere. If you express an interest in a particular practice area we will endeavour to seat you near the lawyers that practice in that area, and you can seek out as much work from them as you want. For students who opt for the business stream, you should have time to do this with 2-3 different practice groups.

Compensation

Our students are remunerated at a level comparable to that offered by other large downtown Vancouver law firms.  We pay for your articling enrolment fees, which includes fees for the Professional Legal Training Course ("PLTC"), as well as your salary while at PLTC. We also offer a scholarship for third year tuition to our summer students, up to a maximum of $6,000. Students have the option of taking $500 of this amount as a book allowance. Medical and dental benefits as well as a fitness subsidy are also offered to our articling students.
