Serge Lapointe is a partner in Fasken’s Intellectual Property practice group in Montréal and an active member of the Life Sciences and Asia-Pacific practice groups. He advises and assists companies and organizations engaged in the protection, management and strategic leveraging of their innovations through patents, particularly in matters with a strong scientific component.
With more than 25 years of experience in private practice and industry, Serge helps life sciences companies protect, structure and maximize the value of their innovations through patents. He counsels clients in Canada, the United States and internationally. He supports technology development across biotechnology, the pharmaceutical and chemical industries and related fields including genomics, proteomics, biomedical devices, cosmetics, green technologies and agriculture.
Serge takes a strongly business‑focused and pragmatic approach to intellectual property. This approach considers scientific frameworks, regulatory requirements and clients’ commercial realities when structuring patent portfolios aligned with their research, development, investment and commercialization objectives. He is also called upon to intervene in intellectual property due diligence.
He advises a diverse clientele, from start-ups to multinational corporations, as well as research centres and universities active in the life sciences. He also has proven experience in multiple therapeutic and technological fields, including central nervous system disorders, diabetes, virology and microbiology.
Registered as a patent agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office since 2002, Serge contributes actively to the firm, particularly as a mentor to patent agents in training and as a member of internal committees devoted to advancing Fasken’s patent practice. He is a member of the Ordre des chimistes du Québec, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He regularly publishes on patent-related issues and frequently speaks on these topics. His work has been recognized year after year by the IAM Patent 1000, Intellectual Asset Management magazine’s ranking of the world’s leading patent practitioners.
