Laura Fetter is an experienced corporate/commercial lawyer with a reputation for delivering quality work and fostering innovative thinking. She combines her science, technology, business law and innovation background to provide practical business law advice to high growth companies in the emerging technology and life sciences sectors. Laura advises clients regarding formation, governance, financings, acquisitions, exits, and commercial contracts.
Laura is an advocate for the Canadian startup and emerging technology ecosystem and has extensive experience working with companies spinning out of academic institutions, incubators, and accelerators, as well as with founders looking to fund their ideas. Laura advises a broad range of participants including those involved in the creator economy, AI, VR/AR, edtech, legaltech, biotech and medtech. Laura has maintained a versatile approach to her practice leveraging experience guiding clients through various types of business transactions including private placements, IPOs and acquisitions.
During her time at Fasken, Laura has gained valuable experience through secondments at the Ontario Telemedicine Network and Ford Credit Canada Limited, working on a variety of legal matters. Laura was also seconded to the firm’s innovation team where she played a pivotal role in its growth. She provides unique insights on legal tools and technology that help in-house teams work effectively.
Prior to law school, Laura completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Waterloo (Honours Science and Business/Biology – Economics Minor – Co-operative Program) and developed her early career working as a computer lab trainer for faculty/staff at Humber College, a computer science lab instructor at the University of Waterloo and a software project coordinator at BlackBerry. Laura continues to be connected to the Kitchener/Waterloo area by attending and speaking at various technology industry events.
Outside of work, Laura enjoys mixing learning with leisure including listening to podcasts while out on the water with her paddleboard. She also is an avid gamer in virtual reality.
