Big successes in 2009: Lexpert names Fasken Martineau in 3 top business cases & 3 top corporate deals

Toronto (Canada) - Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, announced today that it had the top business case of 2009, as ranked by Lexpert magazine. The firm also figured prominently in several other top business cases and in the list of 2009's top corporate deals.

Fasken Martineau advised on the Top Business Case in 2009:
  • Nolan v. Kerry (Canada) Inc., representing Kerry in a successful defence before the Supreme Court of Canada in a landmark pensions case. Kerry was represented by Ronald Walker and Christine Tabbert (litigation), Peggy McCallum (pensions and benefits) and Scott Rollwagen (research) in Lexpert's top business case of the year.

Fasken Martineau also advised on these Top 10 Business Cases for 2009:
  • Irving Paper Limited v. Atofina Chemicals Inc., representing FMC Corporation and FMC of Canada, Ltd. defending against a price fixing class action. Paul Martin and Laura Cooper represented FMC.
  • Re Nortel Networks Corporation, representing Export Development Canada, Nortel's largest creditor, in Nortel's high-profile insolvency proceedings. Aubrey Kauffman, Edmond Lamek and Donald Milner represented EDC.

Fasken Martineau advised on the following Top Corporate Deals:
  • Addax Petroleum Corporation in its US$8.8 billion acquisition by Sinopec Corp., the largest acquisition ever by a Chinese, state-owned company. Addax was advised by a team from Fasken Martineau's Toronto, Calgary and London offices, including: John Turner, Richard Steinberg, Aaron Atkinson, Richard Peters, Nigel Gordon, June Paddock, John Elias, Krisztian Toth, Tanner Helwig, Mark Lefler and Amanda Fullerton (securities); Huy Do (competition); and Mitchell Thaw (tax).
  • Export Development Corporation, Nortel's largest creditor, in the US$2.03 billion bankruptcy filing of the large technology company. As noted above, Aubrey Kauffman, Edmond Lamek and Donald Milner represented EDC in this case that Lexpert flagged as one of the top business cases and top corporate deals of 2009.
  • Daimler AG in the restructuring of Chrysler Corp. Jon Levin, and Bill Bies and Kathleen Hanly (tax) acted for Daimler AG in this high-profile restructuring.
