Montréal
Fasken Martineau's Montréal offices have over 175 lawyers. Though they are divided among four principal practice areas – Corporate/Commercial; Litigation and Dispute Resolution; Labour, Employment, and Human Rights; and Intellectual Property – our Montréal offices offer a full range of services in virtually all areas of law at the national and international levels.
Montréal - The City
Montréal is one of the largest metropolises in Canada and North America. In fact, it is one of the five main manufacturing centers in North America, and one of the ten largest cities on the continent, demographically speaking. Montréal is also a major international center that is home to more than 70 international head offices. It has hosted some of the most prestigious international gatherings, including the 1976 Olympic Games and the 1967 World's Fair.
Population The Montréal Island's population stands at 1.9 million inhabitants, although somewhere in the neighbourhood of 3.7 million people live in Greater Montréal.
Economy Montréal's economy is very diverse. The high technology sector has for some years now played an important role, but activities in the pharmacological, biochemical, aerospace, petrochemical and telecommunications industries still form the basis of the city's economy. Greater Montréal has the third highest concentration of high technology jobs in North America. Montréal is also an international financing and banking center.
Education Montréal stands out in a number of fields, such as telecommunications, aeronautics, pharmaceuticals, life sciences and high technology, thanks in part to its highly trained and creative workforce. The four Montréal universities, their graduate schools and a thoroughly integrated network of general and specialized schools are largely responsible for the explosion of activity in sectors requiring highly-trained manpower.
Stock Market Montréal has a major stock market in the Montréal Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Canada. The Montréal Stock Exchange allied itself with the Chicago Climate Exchange after the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in order to create the Montréal Climate Exchange, a market of environmental products.
Transportation Services The Port of Montréal is the most direct intermodal terminal linking North America's industrial core to the markets of northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It welcomes ocean-going vessels and smaller boats destined for the Great Lakes. In 2005, no less than 24 million tons of freight was shipped to over 100 countries.
Montréal also lies on the principal axis of Canada's railroads, and remains one of the nation's most important railtowns connecting the city to the American and Mexican railway systems.
Finally, Montréal also has two major international airports, one of which caters only to cargo. Some 40 air carriers connect Montréal to the rest of the world.
