Reputation Management:
Mat Wilcox, CEO and Founder of Wilcox Group, one of Canada's largest national independent public relations firms, will talk about how social media is quietly but firmly changing business. Social media thrives on multi-way communications that no one controls, yet everyone influences. While online applications such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn provide great opportunities to acquire new business, they also provide ways to share negative or slanderous results. As businesspeople, you need to develop and implement online strategies to protect and manage your brand and reputation. Learn how to monitor the online conversation; prevent squatters, dopplegangers and yourcompanysucks.com; improve search engine ranking; and build and control your brand.
Litigation Issues:
Berkley Sells, a partner in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, will highlight your legal options for responding to problems involving Social Media that arise from inside and outside of your company, including publication of confidential or sensitive information, misuse of your logo, defamation and other problems. Berkley will also discuss the use of Social Media sites for litigation purposes.
Employment Issues:
Karen Sargeant, a partner in the firm's Labour, Employment and Human Rights Group, will highlight the approaches and internal policies companies should implement to manage Social Media in the workplace and the right of the employer to monitor employee use of Social Media sites at and outside the workplace.
Privacy Issues:
Alex Cameron, an associate in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, will discuss various privacy issues relating to Social Media including the Federal Privacy Commissioner's settlement with Facebook and its implications and notice requirements in privacy policies. Alex will also explore what constitutes a reasonable collection and use of personal information from Social Media sites for a variety of purposes.
