If I Only Knew

What I know Now
Sarah Armstrong - UofT, 2003 Call

"Pack emergency toiletries - Keep a snack in your briefcase. A growling stomach during an interview can be funny but is mainly embarrassing."
Shelley Babin - Windsor, 2007 Call

"Map out the locations of your interviews and walk the route the day before. Time can be tight and if interviews run long and the weather is bad, you don't want to get lost in the underground path and risk making a bad impression by arriving late."
Antonio Di Domenico - Osgoode Hall, 2006 Call

"First, have a conversation with students from your school who have summered or articled at the firm you are interviewing with. These students can provide an abundance of valuable information regarding the firm and can give you a good sense of whether the firm is a good fit. Second, remember that you are interviewing the firm just as much as the firm is interviewing you. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the interview and to assess the firm critically as you make your choices. Third, keep your drink or food in your left hand, as this will keep your right had available to shake hands."
Marc Lefler - Queen's, 2007 Call

"First, do your research. Review each firm's website and prepare questions that are outside the scope of your research. Do not ask questions for which the answers are readily available. Second, be yourself. If you pretend to be somebody else, it will come through in the interview."
Brad Moore - UofT, 2003 Call

"Keep it simple: don't try to be someone you're not, and trust your instincts when a firm feels like a good fit."
Dawn Robertson - Osgoode Hall, 2007 Call

"When you meet a lawyer at an interview or a reception, ask them about what matters they were working on today. It's a great way to start a conversation and it will give you insight into the firm's work and the lawyer's personality.

During the recruiting process, particularly the firm interviews, try to save some time to talk to family and friends who are not involved in the process. They'll help you relax and keep your perspective."
