Students' Golf Open
by Eowynne Feeney-Scott, 2011 Summer Student
On July 12th, 2011 with great excitement the summer students got ready to partake in the annual Fasken's Student Golf Day.
The day began with all the students being whisked away to Station Creek Golf Club. Upon arriving we were greeted by the wonderful Student Committee with lunch, golf carts, clubs and much needed sunscreen. As the sun shone that day, so did our competitive spirit.
Following lunch the teams practiced their swings at the driving range. After much taunting the truth came out on the green as teams combined of partners, associates, and students took to the course.
On the course many laughs were shared as beginners and life time golfers joined forces to compete for the coveted first place and longest drive prizes. At the end of the day we all returned to the clubhouse for a BBQ. While overlooking the beautiful course we enjoyed delicious food and drinks and regaled one another with stories from the day.
We are extremely thankful for all the work done by the Professional Development Team for planning and organizing such a great day. We are also honoured that so many partners, associates and articling students took the time to come out and golf with us.
And while I am sure everyone felt they walked away a winner that day, prizes were given out to:
1St Place Team: Ian Campbell, Andrew Allen, Eowynne Feeney-Scott, Michelle Johnston
2nd Place Team: Dan Fuke, Mae Chong, Reid Crombie, Heather Michel
Most Honest Team: Michael Gleeson, Jack Yu, Susan Newall, Laura Achoneftos
Female Longest Drive: Susan Newell
Male Longest Drive: Andrew Alleyne
Female Closest to the Pin: Gina Yee
Male Closest to the Pin: Will Shaw
"Kickin' it," Fasken's Style
by Gord Akilie, Summer Student 2011
Football, futball, soccer, "footie," "Euro-shinny," "the beautiful game," "the World's game," "the game you played as a kid, with the refreshing orange slices at halftime" – all lesser synonyms for what Fasken's simply calls one of the premier social events of the season!
On June 29, 2011, with half of their summer sojourn already in the backfield, the students (and some lucky junior associates) attended a TFC game at BMO field. The hometown heroes were up against their fierce Canuck rivals, the Vancouver Whitecaps. The teams' previous meeting had resulted in a woefully one-sided, 4-0 (see: nil) Vancouver victory.
Redemption was certainly on the menu.
The evening commenced with a sleek taxi ride to the stadium, where no shortage of concession delights awaited the hungry horde. Popular choices included foot-long hotdogs, nachos, gyros, popcorn, pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, Coca-Cola and, of course, the ubiquitous Carlsberg Light. Fully fuelled and ready to cheer, the team took the edges of their seats.
The game proved an unabated nail-biter, with both teams exhibiting skill, grace, power and an unfortunate inability to score for over 80 minutes. Back and forth the two squadrons inched – kick-for-kick, tête-à-tête – until, with but minutes to spare, Toronto was awarded a penalty kick. On the second attempt (not sure why there were two) the ball sailed over the Vancouver keeper's outstretched hands. The Fasken's flock roared triumphant, popcorn shooting to the stars like so many due diligence summaries.
Redemption had indeed been served, Carlsberg cold.
And with that, another successful 2011 student outing set with the auburn sun. Chats had been enjoyed, friendships solidified and memories made – standard Fasken's fare.
Student Volleyball Tournament: A Blast on the Beach! by Reid Crombie, 2011 Summer Student
Team Fasken's brought the thunder to the beach as 8 brave souls ventured to the sandy courts of Ashbridge's Bay on May 28, 2011 in search of the coveted McCarthy's Charity Volleyball Championship.
The weather blessed the lakeside competitors with an overcast, yet warm day, which was a great relief to competitors who dressed for the worst. The all-star line-up consisted of Laura Achoneftos, Gord Akilie, Dave Babin, Stephanie Clark, Reid Crombie, Nick Gefucia, Rob Iaccino, Heather Michel, Kyla Stilwell and Jack Yu as the official Team Photographer.
The round robin format was not kind to Team Fasken's, who finished just on the outside looking in on the playoffs, which saw the top 8 (of 18) teams move on. While Fasken's brought their A games, especially Dave Babin and his lovely headers, the competition proved to be too stiff. With the on-court excitement finished for the day, the team decided to bask in the sunlight on the patio of the Boardwalk Café. It was off the court that Team Fasken's was able to bring smiles to their faces and a great chance to bond with friends over a beverage.
All in all, the day out in the sun turned out to be a success, especially for Mooreland's, who received the proceeds from the various firms' fundraising efforts, which totalled over $16,000, and will provide over 64 underprivileged youth with an opportunity to attend summer camp this year. Participants should be proud of their contribution to a great cause
Summer Student TGIF
by Stephanie Clark, 2011 Summer Student
Hot Docs, the running man, styles and those oh so evil macros consumed our thoughts for the majority of our first week as we participated in Faskens summer student orientation, that was until, Sally made 'the' announcement, it was time to decide what to do for our first summer social.
Left to our own devices, it was quickly decided that whatever activity we pursued, our new uniform of business attire had to be replaced with a uniform we were all much more familiar with, jeans and a t-shirt. With that in mind the brainstorming began!! In the end with one brave individual volunteering her parent's home (that would be me) and two volunteer chefs (Justine and Gord) it was decided that a bbq would be the perfect way to end an exhausting but exciting first week on the job.
Friday quickly arrived and in no time at all, the grill was lit, and we were hanging out on the patio sharing 'war' stories. As soon as the coals started to glow what originally started off as two volunteer chefs, quickly turned into twenty. As one can imagine with twenty chefs gathered round the grill, chaos quickly pursued. We chopped and seasoned, or just manned the grill. Four hours later after some sweat and toil in the kitchen and lots of chatter, a feast was unveiled.
Friday turned into early Saturday while we continued to talk, laugh and eat and enjoy some refreshments. It was a great night to start off what it sure to be a fantastic summer!!! While it was our first social of the year it will surely not be the last.
