Former Chair of the firm’s Competition, Marketing & Foreign Investment group, Douglas New carries on an active regulatory law practice which includes providing specialized advice to domestic and foreign clients on matters of national security and pre-merger regulatory clearances under legislation such as the Competition Act, Bank Act, Insurance Companies Act, Investment Canada Act and Canada Transportation Act.

Douglas previously served with Canada’s Foreign Investment Review Agency (now the Investment Review Division of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) as a Special Advisor (Legal) to the Deputy Commissioner. His national security expertise is a direct result of providing advice and counsel to numerous foreign investors making direct investments in Canada, both in connection with acquisitions of existing Canadian businesses and the establishment of new businesses in Canada.

Regularly commenting on Canada’s national security, competition, and foreign investment laws, Douglas has contributed articles to publications including Business Lawyer (ABA), CA Magazine and International Financial Law Review, has served as a contributing editor to the Matthew Bender & Co publication Doing Business In Canada and as editor-in-chief for Review of International Business Law, and was a contributing author to Foreign Investment Review Law in Canada. Douglas most recently sat on the editorial board of the Competition Chronicle.

Douglas obtained his Juris Doctorate at Western University, following which he was called to the degree of Barrister-at-Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada and enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ontario.

Douglas has served on numerous Firm committees including as Chair of the Business Development Committee and as Co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.  In recognition of his efforts to promote diversity in the legal profession in Canada, he received the Traditional Law Practice Award from the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers in 2013.

Named a leading Canadian lawyer in the area of foreign investment law by Chambers Global, Douglas is also an Adjunct Professor at Ryerson University lecturing on the subject of business law at the Ted Rogers School of Business Management.
