Fasken’s Montreal office hires approximately 12 articling students each year through the Course aux stages process. We offer summer positions and part-time positions during school year to our future articling students.
The summer program begins during the 3rd week of May and is offered to all of our future articling students who have completed the second year of their university law program. You will work full time for a minimum of ten consecutive weeks. At the end of the first week of orientation, training and integration, you will be assigned to one of our practice groups. In addition to quickly integrating into the practice group's activities, you will have the opportunity to participate in major and stimulating cases. You’ll participate in firm events such as seminars and teambuilding activities.
About ten weekly training luncheons will be given by our lawyers to help you develop your knowledge of our various practice groups. Breakfasts with the student committee will also be organized twice a month so that you can discuss the mandates in which you are involved with the other students.
Our fall-winter program's flex-time schedule allows you to work around your university or Québec Bar studies. You will not be assigned to a specific practice group like you were during the summer program. Instead, you will be given ad hoc or directed research mandates that will allow you to take the breaks you need to prepare for exams. To ensure continuity in your files and provide a better learning experience, we ask that students who are with us during the school year work a minimum of fifteen (15) hours a week.
We invite our summer students to participate in a unique and flexible secondment program as part of their summer experience with the firm. It provides our students with unique opportunities to experience the practice of law in other settings and from different viewpoints.
The secondment program is optional, but for those students who are interested, we provide secondment opportunities with our Canadian offices (Vancouver or Toronto) or with one of our various clients.
We offer two articling periods – one starting in late January and the other in mid-June. Each articling period begins with three days of training and integration into the firm's community. Your articling period is made up of three rotations, one in each of the firm’s three major practice groups: Litigation (including Intellectual Property and Environment), Corporate and Labour. At the end of your third rotation, you will be asked to select the practice group in which you want to end your articling period for a last rotation of six weeks.
Throughout your articling period, you will also attend the Lunch & Learn training sessions given by lawyers. Weekly breakfast meetings will also be organized with your articling period Maîtres de stage to discuss the mandates assigned to each articling student and exchange ideas.
MENTORING, TRAINING & EVALUATION
We also offer a mentorship program. As a student with the firm, you will be paired with a mentor who will play an active and important role in helping you integrate and develop professionally. Once you enter your articling period, the Maîtres de stage are supported by mentors from the three large practice groups. You will also receive support from our professional development team and student committees.
You’ll receive evaluations and feedback throughout the articling program and a formal evaluation at the end of each rotation. We know that feedback goes both ways; students are welcome to raise questions, concerns or comments at any time.
Throughout the year, you’ll participate in firm-wide training seminars focused specifically on students, professional development sessions for lawyers, practice group meetings and regional events focused on clients and community activities.
Fasken compensates students at rates comparable to other national law firms. Your bar admission and articling enrolment fees will be covered by the firm and your will receive your regular salary during the bar admission course.
Articling students receive dental, medical and extended health care benefits as well as as cell phone monthly fees.
The Montreal office, along with most of the other Montreal law firms, has signed the Entente de recrutement 2017/2018 which sets out rules regarding the recruitment of law students. Accordingly, we do not recruit first year students, not even for summer positions which are only offered to our future articling students.
