Chris assists clients with various corporate and commercial transactions with a focus on the purchase and development of commercial real estate and infrastructure projects, the purchase and sale of businesses for which property is integral, and on commercial leasing. Chris works closely with a wide variety of real estate industry clients including developers, utilities, investors and entrepreneurs, and commercial landlords and tenants.
Chris’ development project practice includes working with residential, commercial, hospitality, retail and industrial real estate developers. He works at all stages of a project, from risk assessment and due diligence, through acquisition and then subsequent rezoning, subdivision and other development approvals.
His development experience also includes advising institutional clients in respect of numerous large and complex utility, transportation, infrastructure and natural resource transactions and developments. Chris advises in industries including hydroelectricity, liquefied natural gas, pipelines, mining, transportation and industrial services.
Chris regularly acts for both buyers and sellers of businesses with significant real estate components. This has included the purchase and sale of numerous hotels and resorts, restaurants, retail businesses and shopping centres. With the ability to understand the complexities of the particular business operations, Chris works closely with Fasken colleagues in other practice areas to identify and manage identified business risks, and to co-ordinate smooth transaction closing and business transitions.
Chris also maintains a very active leasing practice, acting for landlords and tenants of office, retail, hospitality, commercial and industrial properties. Chris counsels clients knowing the significance of the long-term relationship created by leases, and the importance of establishing certainty between the parties at the outset. Landlords rely on Chris to understand and manage their leasing risk, and tenant clients know he will focus on understanding their business needs for the premises and ensuring those needs are met.
