Dany Fillion, PhD

The success of innovative companies in the life sciences, biotechnology and chemical industries depends on obtaining and protecting intellectual property rights—patents are one of the key tools of this success.
Language(s) French, English

Dany uses his multi-disciplinary training, experience and in-depth understanding of technologies on behalf of clients to obtain monopolies protecting their inventions. As such, he specializes in preparing and prosecuting patent applications and providing opinions on patentability, validity, infringement and/or freedom to operate in the areas of life sciences, biotechnology and chemistry.

Before joining Fasken, Dany worked as an associate researcher for a pharmaceutical consortium on the development of a new generation of biosensors with diagnostic and preclinical applications in diabetes. He was also a postdoctoral research fellow with the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine. His research focused on evaluating new therapeutic avenues to prevent premature births and treat cardiovascular diseases and was funded by two postdoctoral research grants. Dany also worked as a R&D chemist in the area of microelectronic processes.

Dany holds degrees in two complementary scientific fields, pharmacology and chemistry, as well as a certificate in law. While a doctoral student, he presented his research at different international conferences and published a number of scientific articles as first author. Dany also taught to medical students while at University and to high school students in chemistry.

As a technical patent advisor, Dany’s practice covers a broad spectrum of technical fields in life sciences (pharmacology, biology, biochemistry, etc.) and chemistry (organic, inorganic, mineral, etc.), as well as clean/green technologies, diagnostic tools and medical devices, for example.

Aware of the effort, time and money each inventor must invest to transform ideas into reality, Dany offers clients customized advice on patents, including the protection strategy to adopt or providing patentability, validity, infringement, and/or freedom to operate opinion(s). Given his experience in areas where technological innovation is the driving force that creates added value, Dany understands clients’ reality and the issues they face when it comes to protecting their ideas in an increasingly competitive environment.

In his spare time, Dany enjoys challenging the waves in a sailboat and the road on a motorcycle.
