Kevin O’Callaghan will discuss Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) - An indigenous or aboriginal communities right to participate in decision making on issues affecting them. What does this mean from a practical perspective? How is this obligation different from consultation? Navigating the complexities of FPIC, as well as insight on how it is evolving and how this evolution will impact companies and their projects particularly in the extractive sector.
Norm Keith will provide an overview of the Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act, review of available defenses to charges under the CFPOA, a commentary on Niko Resources and Griffiths Energy cases with insights into the errors and omissions that lead to the criminal convictions and penalties, including jail terms as in the R. v. Karigar decision.
Hannah Roskey will discuss what it means to have a Social Licence to Operate (SLO) and how it has specifically impacted projects in the Alberta oil patch. Having an SLO is becoming an essential part of operating in around the world as without acceptance or approval from local communities, organisations will find it increasingly difficult to obtain operational permits or licences.
