Across Canada, lobbying law enforcement is increasingly more aggressive. Here in Alberta, Bill 11 proposes new rules, plus detailed changes to how the Lobbyists Act will be enforced. Companies and organizations should prepare now to stay on the right side of the law and avoid potential charges or administrative penalties.

Federal lobbying law, too, is actively enforced; the average penalty imposed by courts is more than $10,000. Some individuals convicted for failing to register under the federal Act never actually lobbied. In other parts of Canada, new lobbying laws have taken effect or enforcement activity has increased.

Government relations is a regulated activity. The rules are complex and varied. Enforcement is real. CEOs are liable. Lobbying laws create great compliance risk for businesses, organizations and consultants. Are you compliance-ready?

Fasken is Canada’s leader in legal advice and representation on lobbying law compliance.
