How we understand 'race' today is historically embedded in the dehumanization of Black and Indigenous Peoples for the purposes of colonial empire expansion, and through conduits such as mainstream media, have informed laws and policies in what is currently Canada. These living legacies inform our ideologies and how institutions operate today, with consequential systemic barriers having a disproportionate impact on people in Canada.
Larissa Crawford of Future Ancestors Services Inc. will support audience members in fostering critical reflections on the construct of race and its real-life implications on how the Canadian state controls and fails to protect Black and Indigenous lives. The approach to this learning is informed by a restorative approach to anti-racism work, and acknowledges that we all come to our shared time together in different places of our learning journeys.
