Jean Masson practises in the areas of corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and more specifically, communications, natural resources (forests, mines) and transportation. He works in highly regulated sectors of activity and has developed an in-depth knowledge of the administrative and governmental machineries.

Jean acts for public and private sector clients on issues related to permits, contracts, licenses and franchises. A significant part of his practice is devoted to government relations, mines and mining financing, and the Plan Nord. 

He has been present in this region for a number of years and supports mining companies with various aspects of their projects, such as obtaining permits, certificates and other required authorizations, developing access infrastructure, building roads, railroads or airports, energy supply and obtaining public funding for such infrastructure. He has published articles and delivered presentations on the Plan Nord.

Among his noteworthy professional accomplishments, Jean co-directed the first public-private partnership in Quebec, which won several prestigious awards for the design, construction, financing and completion of Highway 25 in the vicinity of Montréal.

Community involvement

  • As trustee of the Fiducie de commémoration de la mémoire de Robert Bourassa, he was the primary initiator of the creation of the monument dedicated to the memory of the late Prime Minister in the gardens of the Assemblée nationale du Québec.
  • Mr. Masson has also been a volunteer and firm supporter of McGill University's Professor David Bird who, over the past 15 years, has been struggling to reintroduce the peregrine falcon in Québec, especially in Montreal. His work with the peregrine falcons that nest each year on the Stock Exchange Tower, site of Fasken Martineau's Montréal offices, has earned the firm the prestigious Mérite de la conservation de la faune awarded by the ministère de l'Environnement du Québec.
  • Through his volunteer activities, he supports several charitable organizations such as The Grace Dart Extended Care Centre and "Itinéraire".
  • He also volunteers his efforts for Tennis Canada and the Quebec Tennis Federation.
