Karen Yao engages in a broad corporate/commercial practice focusing on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and securities. 

Karen obtained her J.D. and Bachelor of Civil Law from McGill University. Prior to law school, she obtained a Master of Economics and a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics and Political Science from the University of Ottawa. She has studied abroad at Sciences Po, Paris and at Shantou University.

Prior to joining the firm, Karen gained experience working on emerging policies, risk management, and Canadian securities regulatory matters at the Ontario Securities Commission’s General Counsel’s Office and Derivatives Branch. She has also held various roles within the federal government and the Parliament of Canada. 

During law school, Karen served as President of the McGill Arbitration Student Society, worked as Associate Editor for the McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law, and volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada. Outside of law, Karen enjoys piano, fitness, emceeing, and travelling.
