Overview

Kathleen Butterfield is a partner in Fasken’s Financial Services Group and Leader of the Firm’s Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia Practice Groups. She is a trusted advisor to banks, insurance companies, credit unions, and trust and loan companies, as well as other regulated and unregulated financial services providers including payments businesses and fintechs on a wide array of commercial, transactional and regulatory matters.

Kathleen has an in-depth knowledge of federal financial institutions legislation, provincial consumer protection and cost of borrowing legislation. Clients rely on her strong advocacy in navigating their organizations through critical undertakings including credit card issuance, co-brand credit card programs, private label credit card programs and loyalty programs. She also advises on the offering of retail banking products and services such as deposit products, payment products and payment systems.

An adept corporate/commercial lawyer, Kathleen has also acted on many significant and complex commercial arrangements and M&A transactions. Clients appreciate the diligent approach that she takes to understanding their business objectives and pressures and value her practical, innovative solutions to business-critical decisions.
