“Les cabinets d’avocats en mode séduction des start-up” by Anne Gaignaire, Les Affaires.

Les Affaires quotes Montréal lawyers Jean-Nicolas Delage, Éric Bédard and Christian Jacques in an article on the growth of start-ups in Quebec.

The firms, however, don’t have the same approach to selecting clients in these programs. Some, like Fasken Martineau, hand-pick them based on a strict selection process, because they want to identify the most promising businesses, the future nuggets. “Supporting these start-ups with an accessible program is an investment for us. We’re taking a risk, so we select clients using the same criteria as for venture capital funds”, explained Jean-Nicolas Delage, a partner with Fasken Martineau, who handles mainly technological start-ups.

“It’s a clientele that demands certainty regarding costs and a good understanding of the milieu”, observed Éric Bédard, Managing Partner at Fasken Martineau.

“These entrepreneurs have a lot to learn about how to structure their business from the beginning to avoid future problems and about contacting a lawyer preventively”, stated Christian Jacques, a partner with Fasken Martineau.
