The Lawyer’s Daily quotes Vancouver lawyer, Brook Greenberg, in an article on the Law Society of BC’s approach to mental health and substance use issues.
‘Task force chair Brook Greenberg of Fasken said the task force looked at as much social science information as possible to reach its conclusions, in particular a report by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Betty Ford Foundation which revealed substantial levels of problem drinking and significant mental health concerns in nearly 13,000 U.S. lawyers.
“There were a number of stats that showed lawyers had significantly higher incidences of depression, alcohol issues and mental health issues including suicide attempts,” he said. “All of those things are very serious and at higher levels than in comparable professional, so they caused concern in a number of jurisdictions. You can see in the anecdotal information that is available to us that there are obviously significant stressor for those who are in law.”
