Zenith Awards 2014: John Torrey and John Turner honoured by Lexpert

Fasken Martineau announces that two of its lawyers received 2014 Lexpert Zenith Awards.

Toronto (Canada) – Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, is pleased to announce that John Torrey and John Turner received 2014 Lexpert Zenith Awards, which honour today's leaders in practice excellence who demonstrate thought leadership and set new standards for the legal profession. Lexpert presented the awards at a gala dinner in Toronto on October 2.

John Torrey is well known for his banking and project finance expertise, having advised on a variety of notable acquisitions and project financings, including the financing of the $6.44 billion acquisition of Safeway by Sobeys, the $2.5 billion financing of Kinross Gold and the $1.2 billion financing of Davis + Henderson. He is repeatedly recognized as a leading banking and finance practitioner by Chambers Global, The Best Lawyers in Canada, the Guide to the World's Leading Banking Lawyers and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. Best Lawyers named John Project Finance Lawyer of the Year in Toronto for 2015 and Banking Lawyer of the Year for 2010. He has also been distinguished as a Leading Individual for Banking and Finance by The Legal 500 Canada 2014.

John Turner is the leader of the firm's Global Mining Group and has been involved in many leading corporate finance and M&A deals in the resources sector, including First Quantum's successful $5.1 billion unsolicited acquisition of Inmet, Coeur Mining's superior proposal to acquire Orko Silver, Oryx Petroleum's $250 million IPO, AuRico Gold's $1.5 billion acquisition of Northgate, Addax Petroleum's $9 billion sale to Sinopec and IAMGOLD's $600 million acquisition of Trelawney. John joined Fasken Martineau as an articling student in 1987, became an associate in 1989 and a partner in 1995. He was resident in the firm's London office from 1993 to 1997. He is a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and is consistently named in leading legal publications as a prominent lawyer for mining, energy and natural resources law.

The accomplishments of many Fasken Martineau lawyers have been celebrated at the annual Lexpert Zenith Awards. In 2013, Laura Cooper and Marina Pratchett, QC, received the Zenith Award recognizing leading women in law. In 2012, Fasken Martineau's Louise Mailhot, Ad.E. and Alan Schwartz, QC received the Zenith Award for Leadership Through Change in recognition of their work as change-agents for over 40 years in law. In 2011, Marie Bourdeau and Nicolas Leblanc received the Zenith Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in recognition of their work with Espoir d'enfants, an orphanage/school project in Haïti. In 2010, Corina Weigl and Laura West received the Gold Zenith Award in recognition of their pro bono work with Social and Enterprise Development Innovations (SEDI). In 2009, Elena Hoffstein received the Zenith Award in recognition of Women in Business Law.
