Montréal (Canada) – Fasken is pleased to announce the Government of Quebec (available in French only) is extending the mandate of Raymond Chrétien, OC, a partner and strategic advisor at Fasken’s Montréal office, to include steel and aluminum.

Quebec has enjoyed a temporary exemption from the 10% tariff on aluminum and 25% tariff on steel exported to the United States since March 8, 2018. The Government of Quebec and the steel and aluminum industries have presented a common front in seeking a complete and permanent exemption from the customs duties imposed by the United States earlier this month.

Mr. Chrétien was retained as Quebec’s chief negotiator on the subjects of softwood lumber, newsprint and printing paper in October 2016. He will continue to work closely with the Government of Quebec and the industry to defend the interests of steel and aluminum workers and companies.

“We congratulate our ambassador in Washington, Minister Freeland, Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Couillard and his Ontario counterpart, Premier Wynne, for their efforts in securing the exemption granted to Canada. Canada, Quebec and the industry are working very hard in talks with their Washington counterparts to make Americans more aware of the benefits of free trade, for both Canada and the United States. We must ensure that the exemption stays in place,” said Mr. Chrétien.

“Raymond’s work on softwood lumber and on newsprint and printing paper has been outstanding. We are very proud to see his mandate extended to the steel and aluminum industries. We have no doubt that he will continue his excellent work,” said Éric Bédard, Managing Partner at Fasken for the Quebec Region.

Mr. Chrétien is a seasoned diplomat and former Ambassador of Canada to France, the United States, Belgium, Mexico and the Congo. His extensive knowledge and high-level experience in the business community, international financing agencies, government affairs and international negotiations and trade agreements add further value to the advice the firm provides to its clients, whether they are companies doing business in Canada or Canadian businesses expanding in the United States, Europe, South America and Africa.
