Johannesburg (South Africa) – Fasken promotes Rosemary Hunter to Partner in the Pensions and Benefits Group. She is based in the Firm’s Johannesburg office.

As a leader with 25 years’ experience in the field of pensions, employee benefits and financial services law Rosemary advises and acts for retirement funds, medical schemes and providers of financial products and services to them. She is recognized by Who’s Who Legal 2018 for her thought leadership and as a “premier pensions fund lawyer in South Africa”. Apart from her years in practice, Rosemary was for three years a senior executive of the Financial Services Board and the deputy registrar of pension funds. In the latter position, she was responsible for the day-to-day exercise of the powers of the registrar of pension funds under the Pension Funds Act, 1956.

“Rose has unique insight into many of the regulatory and other challenges faced both by her clients and by governments and regulators, in South Africa and in neighbouring states, for some of which she has provided policy advice and drafted legislation and regulatory instruments,” said Blaize Vance, Managing Partner, South Africa.

In an evolving legal landscape for retirement pension and benefits plans, the Firm’s Pensions and Benefits Group assists clients by providing innovative and cost effective advice.

Rosemary is also a visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand where she teaches pension law to post-graduate students and practitioners. She is well known as a speaker at conferences both in South Africa and abroad. Her published legal writing includes the leading pension law textbook in South Africa which she co-authored and edited, and which has been cited with approval in the judgments of various tribunals and courts including the Supreme Court of Appeal. Rose’s pro bono work as a legal advisor to the Unpaid Benefits Campaign and trainer of its community volunteers has been lauded by, amongst others, senior executives in the financial services industry.
