Richard Cheung is a member of the firm's Intellectual Property (IP) and Life Sciences Industry practice groups. A registered Patent Agent and Trade-mark Agent in Canada, Richard’s practice is focused on areas of IP law including patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs and trade secrets.

Advising clients ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations, Richard develops customized strategies for the creation, protection, commercialization, licensing and enforcement of IP assets.

In his patent practice, Richard conducts searches and provides opinions on matters involving the patentability of inventions, validity of patents, freedom-to-operate and patent non-infringement; drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications; enforcement of patent rights; and international patent portfolio management.

Routinely advising clients on regulatory matters involving drug and medical devices in Canada, Richard works on compliance and enforcement issues, as well as pricing and reimbursement, regulatory exclusivity, data protection, patent listing; look-alike sound-alike drug names, establishment licensing, medical device licensing, problem reporting, recalls, and advertising and promotion.

Working in the innovative pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, Richard has experience across a wide range of matters, including proceedings the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations and the preparation of research, services, development, supply, non-disclosure, and material transfer agreements. He has also provided advice on matters relevant to the Pharmacy industry, such as rebates, professional allowances, and scope of practice issues.

Richard is a licensed and registered pharmacist in the Province of Ontario with experience in community and hospital pharmacy. His doctorate thesis involved the development of a novel particulate delivery system for drugs for the treatment of various cancers.

He also has broad technical experience in the areas of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. This varied background allows Richard to bring a unique perspective to the challenges and issues facing clients in the Life Sciences industry.
