Sam Rickett is a senior litigation partner and practises a wide variety of Corporate/Commercial Civil Litigation including Administrative law and has appeared at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Sam’s capital markets experience is extensive. He acted for First Quantum Minerals Ltd. on its successful $5.4 billion hostile takeover bid for Inmet Mining Corporation. He acted as counsel for the Special Committee in respect of the elimination of the dual class shares in Magna International Inc. which included appearances before the Ontario Securities Commission, the Commercial Court and on the appeal. Sam acted for Hollinger Inc. in respect of claims brought against its former board of directors. As well, he acted as counsel in respect of independent investigations including insider trading and governance reviews in relation to public companies. He advised Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. in relation to the contested proxy battle launched by Pershing Square.

Sam was involved in a number of corporate litigation matters including shareholder disputes involving claims for oppression, and dissent and fair value claims and acted in a number of securities-related litigation cases including appearances before the Ontario Securities Commission and the Alberta Securities Commission in contested takeover proceedings involving a "poison pill". He acted for a number of participants in the capital markets in litigious matters including brokerage firms, funds managers and insurance companies. In addition, Sam acted in a number of litigious matters involving corporate reorganizations including plans of arrangement. He also acted in various cross border litigation disputes and the enforcement of foreign judgments.

Sam has acted for a number of public companies involved in the mining and resources industry in respect of International Arbitration and a variety of lawsuits in Africa and Central and South America.

Sam acted successfully for Inukshuk Wireless Partnership, a partnership of Bell Canada and Rogers Communications Inc. in respect of cross border litigation in Canada and California relating to wireless spectrum in various geographic territories across Canada.

Sam has extensive experience in litigation relating to computer-related claims including lawsuits dealing with third party maintenance of computers, substantial claims for damages with respect to software licensing, development agreements and disputes arising out of contracts for the purchase of software and hardware.

He acted in respect of a number of franchise disputes and has experience in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADR) in the franchise area where he acted for a major national franchisor.

Sam also acted in a number of estate disputes including a significant matter relating to the mediated resolution of disputes amongst one of North America’s wealthiest families.

He also acts for a number of professionals in the defence of professional negligence claims.
