Toronto (Canada) – The Project Finance International (PFI) Awards have been announced and the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been chosen as the 2018 Transport Deal of the Year for the Americas.

Fasken is proud to have been lead counsel for the Government of Canada and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) on this important Canada-US cross-border project.

The PFI Yearbook 2019, which looks at all the top international project finance events for the year, lists the Gordie Howe bridge as a standout transaction because of all the challenges it was able to surmount, including bi-national issues, foreign exchange risk, tax reforms and tariffs, all while the negotiations of a new trade agreement between the US and Canada were taking place.

The C$5.7 billion project encompasses the construction of a six-lane bridge, which will end the bottle-necking that currently exists between Ontario and Michigan. This new state of the art, environmentally friendly, cable-stayed bridge will be one of the largest public infrastructure projects in North America.

Given the scope, breadth and complexity of this project was significant, it required top expertise in infrastructure and public-private partnerships. This award is a testament to the entire Fasken team and the hard-work they invested in the project.

The Firm’s Infrastructure and Public-Private Partnerships Group is at the leading edge of industry developments across the world. Having represented the Canadian government and WDBA on this significant deal illustrates the strength of our team.
