Overview

Fasken’s Technology Group is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2025 Toronto Technology Law Symposium on Monday, June 2. This event will be offered in a hybrid format and will provide an opportunity to participate in sessions that discuss pertinent topics related to technology.

We will be covering the below sessions:

Session 1 - AI Governance Post-AIDA
Join us to discuss how existing laws and other governmental and industry guidance apply to AI, and how organizations can approach compliance and governance when they use or develop AI systems.

Session 2 - Technology Contracting in an Uncertain World
This presentation will focus on the role of technology contracting in environments marked by rapid technological development, volatility and uncertainty. Attendees will receive an overview of contracting in a shifting technological landscape.

Session 3 - A Meta-Study: Lessons Learned from a Decade of Technology Deals
This presentation will provide an overview of some of the prominent cases in the last decade related to failed technology deals, including ERPs and outsourcing arrangements. It will outline the most common failures that arose across deals.

Session 4 - From Dark Patterns to Data Breaches: Key Privacy Insights
This session will review some key privacy topics that have emerged over the past year:

1. Deceptive Design Patterns (Dark Patterns):These are increasingly drawing the attention of privacy and consumer protection regulators. Many websites and mobile apps employ deceptive design patterns to push, manipulate, or sway users into making decisions that may not be fully informed or in their best interests.

2. Breach Reporting Updates: We will explore how the Federal, Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta Commissioners have approached breach reporting.

Session 5 - E-Commerce/Consumer Protection Update
Consumer protection law in Canada is a key regulatory framework governing e-commerce that continues to evolve. This presentation will include a discussion on the key changes that businesses and legal counsel need to consider and update in their e-commerce practices, such as their consumer-facing business processes and their online terms of sale and terms of use that will result from these new laws.

Session 6 - Survey: IT Arrangements - Concerns, Opportunities, and Best Practices
This session will in part draw from themes set out in OSFI Guideline B-10. Attendees will also learn about the opportunities that effective third-party technology arrangements can bring, including enhanced operational efficiency and improved risk management.
