Climate Action

Recognizing the importance of climate action to our clients, Firm members, and the planet, we are committed to measuring our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on an annual basis and reducing these along a science-aligned pathway.

  • We aim to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 from a 2022 baseline. To reach this milestone, we will collaborate closely with our property managers to decarbonize our buildings, make energy efficiency improvements, and increase our use of renewable energy.
  • We are also committed to achieving net zero emissions from Purchased Goods and Services by 2050; these make up the largest component of the Firm’s Scope 3 GHG emissions. We will engage with key suppliers to gather data on their emissions and work together to adopt practices or targets that align with Fasken’s decarbonization goals. We will also integrate sustainability considerations into the Firm’s procurement processes to achieve GHG emissions reductions.

Significant progress so far includes the installation of 340 solar panels on the roof of our Johannesburg office. These panels are saving approximately 319 tons of CO2 emissions annually, which is equivalent to planting 12,281 trees.

Pro Bono

In 2025, our lawyers provided over 13,220 hours of pro bono legal support. Through over 190 pro bono matters we helped clients who required legal advice across a wide range of areas. We provided access to justice through pro bono workshops and helpdesks and assisted clients in matters ranging from refugee, housing, and gender-based violence matters in South Africa, to defending language rights and protecting biodiversity in Quebec, and supporting Indigenous Peoples and their communities.

Fasken has been recognized in Canadian Lawyer’s 5-Star Pro Bono Firms 2024 report, highlighting the Firm’s dedication to bettering our communities through pro bono services. We are proud of the commitment of our lawyers to pro bono legal services. This recognition is a reflection of their efforts and the positive impact in our communities.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

We know meaningful change takes work, so we are committed to empowering all voices and fostering equity, diversity and inclusion with intentional action, constant learning and authentic engagement.

Our Commitment

Reconciliation

Reconciliation requires us to learn more about our collective history, understand how that history continues to affect the present, and apply what we learn to our own language, conduct and actions. Our reconciliation plan focuses on key goals, takes meaningful actions towards truth and reconciliation and is a response to the call to action to corporate Canada. We are a proud supporter of the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB), an organization dedicated to fostering relationships between Indigenous entrepreneurs and Canada’s institutional enterprises to cultivate shared prosperity and help keep Indigenous businesses at the forefront of the Canadian economy.

Additionally, we contributed to both local and international relief efforts and participated in the annual United Way workplace campaign. Our collective charitable donations for 2025 totalled almost $621,000, reflecting our ongoing dedication to making a meaningful impact.
